EcoSilver Jewellery Workshops at Devon Open Studios
Devon Open Studios is now underway and this year, I am offering two brand new workshop opportunities.
As you will probably have realised, I try hard to reuse as much of my scrap silver in my own jewellery making and will now only use EcoSilver and recycled gold to replace my precious metals as they run out. This environmentally friendly way of working is an expectation more than a personal choice of customers and clients too and so I am very pleased to be able to host two workshops where participants can use EcoSilver to create a really unique trio of bangles or rings.
So what’s on offer? Below is a list of (hopefully) all you need to know and if you would like to book or need to know more, please do get in touch.
Where and when?
The 3hr workshops are taking place at Devon Open Studios, Venue 127- Edge of the Teign, The Pavilion, Hearn Field, Combeinteignhead, TQ12 4RR. We have plenty of parking, level access and toilets on site. The sessions will be on Wednesday 15th September and Wednesday 22nd September starting at 1pm. Please allow a little extra time for me to polish your new jewellery at the end as sometimes we do run over!
What can I make?
The projects are to make a trio of either EcoSilver rings OR bangles. These complementing trios are designed to be worn as a set so all the rings or bangles will be made to the same size. These photographs show you samples but you will obviously make your own decisions about which form of silver wire to use, textures, additions and finishes to apply. Participants can make either of the projects on either of the days.
What skills will I be using/learning?
The skills for either project will be much the same whether making the bangles or the rings. You will be adding texture with hand tools or maybe the rolling mill, sawing, soldering and filing.
Do I need any prior experience?
The projects are suitable for all, whether a beginner or someone with a little experience. I will be guiding you how to use the tools correctly and safely as well as helping you to make choices about design and finish. My own jewellery will also be available to view at the Open Studio should you need some inspiration. Please do advise me if you have any specific needs that may mean you require extra support.
How much does the workshop cost?
Sadly silver, and other precious metals are increasingly costly but, I have done my best to price the two workshops as low and competitively as I can, with a reduction on materials cost and by lowering my usual tutoring rate*. The EcoSilver Rings project is £60 and the EcoSilver Bangles project is £90. Participants will need to decide in advance which project they would like to make so that I can order materials in advance.
How do I book a place?
Booking is made by emailing me here to check availability and to reserve a place and then, once the payment is received, your booking will be confirmed.
How many places are there? What if it’s fully booked?
For now, I am only taking four bookings for each afternoon, but I will hold a waiting list should I feel that it is safe to accommodate any extra participants in the room nearer the time. If you aren’t lucky enough to secure a place, please remember that I do hold 1:1 or paired workshop experiences at my home workshop and will be happy to host you there after the Open Studios have finished.
Windows and the door into the room will be kept open and I will (and will encourage all other participants to) carry out a lateral flow test the day before the workshop. Participants will be sharing some tools and I will ask that regular sanitising of hands is carried out during the session. The wearing of masks will be optional so please bear that in mind before booking. Should guidance or legislation change, I will adopt any changes accordingly. If the workshops must be cancelled because of new restrictions or due to my own illness, I will honour bookings at my home workshop at a new convenient date.
What to bring
Please bring an apron, mask if you wish to wear one and don’t forget glasses if you need them! Varifocals can be tricky to use for some work so if you have separate glasses for close work, I advise you to bring them too.
I do hope that you will want to come along and take part – spaces are limited and booking essentail so I do hope to hear from you soon!
* Reduced fee is for the Devon Open Studios workshops only. Normal workshop fees of £50 per person plus a materials charge apply to bookings after the OS event.
